Telecommunications giant MTN Nigeria has temporarily halted its popular XtraTime airtime borrowing and XtraByte data lending services, leaving millions of subscribers unable to access emergency credit.
The disruption, which took effect around April 12, 2026, was first noticed by users who encountered error messages indicating that the borrowing services were “currently unavailable.” While existing borrowed airtime and data remain valid until exhausted, with automatic deductions expected upon recharge, new requests are no longer being processed.
MTN has yet to issue an official explanation for the suspension, fueling speculation and frustration among customers who rely on the services as a financial buffer between recharges.
Across social media platform X, reactions have been swift and varied. Some users expressed desperation at being unable to access credit in urgent situations.
“MTN please let me borrow 🙏😭,” one user pleaded.
Others criticised the move, accusing the company of poor service delivery and lack of communication.
“Confirmed reports that MTN borrowing of data and airtime is no longer available… what nonsense is this,” another user wrote.
There were also humorous takes, with some suggesting the suspension may be a strategy to recover outstanding debts, though no official confirmation supports such claims.
The development has sparked conversations about customer dependency on telecom credit facilities, especially in a challenging economic climate where many subscribers use such services as stop-gap solutions.
Industry observers note that the suspension, temporary or otherwise, could push users to explore alternatives offered by rival networks, potentially impacting customer loyalty if the disruption persists.
For now, subscribers are left waiting for clarity from MTN on when, or if, the services will be restored.
