Four months after the Lagos State Government announced the reconstruction and expansion of the Ogunnusi Road corridor to improve traffic flow and ease commuting, motorists and residents along the Agege axis say they are yet to experience the expected relief as the road continues to deteriorate.
The state government had, on March 1, 2026, announced the reconstruction of the 9-kilometer dual carriageway stretching from Ojodu-Berger Bus Stop to Mobil Filling Station Junction, with work scheduled to commence on March 6.
The project was aimed at improving road infrastructure, reducing travel time, and enhancing connectivity along one of the state’s busiest corridors.
However, a visit by Nigerian NewsDirect to the corridor revealed failed sections of the road, deep potholes, uneven surfaces, and heavy traffic, leaving many road users frustrated.
One motorist, Nelson Ndire, said the deteriorating condition of the road has forced him to replace several vehicle components due to repeated damage caused by the failed sections.
According to him, the government should carry out a comprehensive reconstruction of the road rather than fixing isolated portions.
“I have changed several parts of my vehicle because of this road. The government should stop patching only the damaged spots. They should reconstruct the entire road because that’s the only lasting solution,” he said.
Another motorist, Lekan, said he has stopped using the route regularly because of the persistent traffic congestion and poor road conditions.
He explained that he now takes alternative routes to avoid spending hours in traffic, adding that the road has repeatedly deteriorated despite previous repair efforts.
“Instead of passing through this road, I now look for other routes because of the traffic and the bad condition of the road. The road has been repaired several times, but it keeps failing. The government should properly fix it once and for all,” he said.
Residents and business owners also expressed concern over the condition of the road, noting that prolonged traffic congestion has affected commercial activities and increased transportation costs.
While the Lagos State Government has maintained that road infrastructure remains a priority and several projects are ongoing across the state, road users along the Ogunnusi corridor say they are yet to feel the impact of the promised reconstruction.
Motorists appealed to the state government to accelerate work on the road, stressing that a comprehensive reconstruction rather than intermittent patching of potholes is necessary to provide a lasting solution and ease the daily hardship faced by thousands of commuters.
Efforts to obtain an update from the Lagos State Ministry of Infrastructure on the progress of the project were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
