In a decisive effort to transform Nigeria’s economic landscape, the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, has led a high-level Fiscal Data Harmonisation Meeting (FDHM), marking a pivotal step towards financial stability and transparency.
The meeting, held at his Abuja office, brought together key officials, including Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite, Honourable Minister of State for Finance; Shamsudeen Babatunde Ogunjimi, Accountant General of the Federation; and Mr Tanimu Yakubu, Director General of the Budget Office.
Discussions centred on inconsistencies in fiscal data across government agencies, which have negatively impacted Nigeria’s credit ratings and borrowing capacity. The Minister underscored the importance of greater coordination between institutions such as the Budget Office, the Accountant General’s Office, and the Debt Management Office (DMO). He stressed that delivering precise and comprehensive fiscal data is fundamental to economic stability and investor confidence.
Participants reached a consensus on establishing a Fiscal Data Coordination Framework, which will introduce structured oversight through a main committee, a subcommittee, and technical teams dedicated to aligning fiscal reporting methodologies and economic assumptions. The framework aims to create a standardised approach to financial data management, reducing discrepancies and ensuring consistency across government institutions.
Minister Edun reiterated that Nigeria must take ownership of its fiscal data credibility, reducing reliance on external institutions for economic assessments. He emphasised that accurate reporting is crucial for building investor trust and positioning Nigeria as a reliable player in the global financial system.
The meeting concluded with a firm commitment to implementing the framework, reinforcing financial transparency, strengthening investor confidence, and enhancing Nigeria’s economic outlook. As Nigeria embarks on this transformational journey, accurate and dependable fiscal data will be central to the country’s economic revitalisation. With Mr Edun’s leadership and the collective dedication of key stakeholders, Nigeria is well-positioned to restore its standing on the global economic stage.
