A 24-year-old man, Femi Afolabi, on Friday appeared before an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court in Isabo over an alleged burglary of a convenience store and theft of valuables.
Afolabi, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of burglary and stealing to which he pleaded not guitly.
The Prosecutor, ASP Ojo Adewusi, told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offences on March 3 at about 12:00 a.m. at Ijana Alapako Village, Owode-Egba, Abeokuta.
Adewusi alleged that Afolabi broke into the complainant’s shop with intent to commit a felony and stole valuables worth N794,000 belonging to Mrs Ruth Otufadebo.
He said the stolen items included N489,000 cash; a Tiger generator valued at N100,000; an Itel A100 mobile phone worth N115,000 and a power bank valued at N20,000.
Other items stolen by the defendant are, a phone charger worth N13,000; a 3kg gas cylinder valued at N17,000; 20 pieces of Premier soap worth N20,000 and foodstuffs valued at N20,000.
The prosecutor further alleged that the defendant maliciously damaged seven padlocks valued at N14,000 and two windows worth N15,000, totalling N29,000.
According to Adewusi, the defendant was apprehended by vigilante operatives on duty and subsequently handed over to the police.
He said the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 383, 390(9) and 451 of the Criminal Code, Vol. 1, Laws of Ogun, 2006.
The Magistrate, Mrs R.A. Lawal, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum.
She held that the surety must be a registered bondsman with the Ogun State Judiciary.
Lawal ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Oba Correctional Centre pending the perfection of his bail conditions.
She adjourned the case until Aug. 14 for hearing.
