Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has signed a new contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2031, bringing clarity to his future after months of speculation over his role and long-term direction at the club.
The England international, 21, had previously agreed terms on a deal signed shortly before his breakthrough into the first team in 2023. That agreement was due to expire in 2027, although it included an option for a further year’s extension.
Mainoo, a product of United’s academy system in Stockport, found himself on the fringes under former manager Ruben Amorim, a situation that prompted interest in a possible loan move to Napoli during the January transfer window.
The club, however, rejected the proposal, making clear that he remained part of their long-term plans and was expected to compete for a place in the squad.
Following Amorim’s departure in January, Mainoo has featured more prominently under interim manager Michael Carrick, starting all but one of the 12 league matches since the managerial change. The only absence came through injury during a 2-1 defeat by Leeds United.
“Manchester United has always been my home; this special club means everything to my family,” Mainoo said after signing the new deal.
“I have the privilege of living my dream every single day, with the same relentless desire to succeed here as when I joined my first training session at the age of six.
“We can all feel the momentum building inside the club. I am determined to step up and play my role in helping Manchester United to regularly fight for major trophies in the years ahead.”
Mainoo has also regained a place in the England squad, featuring in friendlies against Uruguay and Japan last month. It marked his first international involvement since Thomas Tuchel’s appointment, and his first appearance for England since September 2024.
Manchester United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, described Mainoo as one of the most naturally gifted young midfielders in the game.
“His technical ability, dedicated professionalism and humble personality make him the perfect role model for our young players and a true credit to our outstanding Academy system,” Wilcox said.
“We are delighted that Kobbie has extended his stay here and have full confidence that he will develop into one of the best players in the world, ready to play a pivotal role in a Manchester United team challenging for the biggest honours.”
Mainoo has made close to 100 senior appearances for United and remains widely regarded as one of the club’s most promising academy graduates in recent years.
