A 100-level student of Madonna University, Okija, Anambra State, identified as William Fubara, has died following alleged prolonged bullying and assault by fellow students, prompting an internal investigation by the institution.

Reports from within the university community indicate that the deceased was allegedly subjected to repeated harassment over a period of time, reportedly linked to his perceived feminine mannerisms.

Some accounts also suggest that he may have been targeted based on suspicions about his sexual orientation, though these claims have not been independently verified.

Sources allege that the incidents occurred largely within the hostel environment, where the student was said to have faced intimidation, ridicule, and, in some instances, physical confrontation.

There are also unconfirmed claims that, in previous situations, some students engaged in acts of searching the phones of colleagues suspected of being gay, raising concerns about student conduct and privacy within the campus community.

The late Fubara was reportedly hospitalised after developing serious health complications, including recurrent seizures. He was said to have been admitted into intensive care, where he later died.

The exact cause of death has not been officially disclosed as of the time of filing this report.

Friends of the deceased claim that he had documented his experiences before his death, leaving behind messages and personal accounts describing alleged harassment and identifying individuals he believed were involved. These claims, however, remain unverified.

The management of Madonna University has commenced an internal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, but has yet to release a detailed official statement addressing the allegations.

The development has raised fresh concerns over student welfare, bullying, and safety within tertiary institutions. Observers note that such cases are often underreported due to fear of retaliation and limited reporting mechanisms.

Stakeholders have called for a thorough and transparent investigation to determine the facts surrounding the student’s death and to ensure accountability where necessary.

Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
