The Law Students’ Society (LSS), University of Lagos (UNILAG), in partnership with Data Science Nigeria (DSN), on Saturday trained law students in data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) for modern legal practice.

The training, tagged “LSS Secretariat Workshop 1.0,” was held at the LL.M. Lecture Room, Faculty of Law, University of Lagos.

Speaking at the event, the General Secretary of LSS, Mr Chiemelie Okpalanozie, said the workshop was organised to bridge legal education and growing digital skills demands.

He said legal practice was becoming increasingly evidence- and data-driven, making it important for law students to acquire skills beyond the traditional classroom.

“Law is increasingly evidence- and data-driven, from case analysis to research.

“That is why data literacy is very important in the legal profession,” he said.

Okpalanozie said the partnership with DSN stemmed from the need to expose law students to technology and digital skills absent from the conventional curriculum.

He said participants were introduced to data literacy, spreadsheet and data analysis tools, structured problem-solving techniques and AI applications in legal research and documentation.

He added that the organisers planned to make the workshop an annual event and eventually extend it to other faculties and institutions nationwide.

Okpalanozie said participants would receive certificates of completion, while discussions were ongoing with DSN on mentorship and internship opportunities for outstanding participants.

One of the facilitators, Ms Fowo Adeniyi, an AI Engineer and Full-Stack Developer, urged participants to embrace technology, saying digital skills would increasingly define success across professions.

Adeniyi said she develops intelligent applications by integrating machine learning into production software.

She added that, as a Community Ambassador for DSN at UNILAG, she promotes technical innovation and supports the growth of the developer community.

Another facilitator, Mr Idowu Adamo, a final-year Biology Education student at UNILAG, took participants through the fundamentals of data science and artificial intelligence.

Adamo said he had worked on projects involving natural language processing, recommendation systems, predictive models and large language model integrations.

He added that he mentors aspiring data scientists and develops innovative learning solutions.

Also speaking, Ms Mayowa Titilola, a Biomedical Engineering student at UNILAG, urged participants to see technology as a tool for solving real-life problems.

Titilola said her interests span healthcare technology, artificial intelligence, data science and product development.

She added that she had participated in several hackathons, research and innovation projects addressing challenges in healthcare, education and emergency response.

She said her aspiration was to develop intelligent healthcare technologies capable of improving lives and advancing healthcare across Africa.

One of the participants, Mr Melvin Tochukwu, described the workshop as insightful, saying it exposed him to the growing role of data analysis and artificial intelligence in legal education and practice.

Another participant, Mr Chukwuebuka Anyibe, said the training broadened his understanding of how technology could enhance legal research, analysis and professional practice.

The lead organiser, Ms Onyinyechukwu Ashinze, expressed optimism that the initiative would produce a new generation of digitally skilled lawyers equipped for a technology-driven legal profession.
