The Lagos State House of Assembly has urged the Executive arm of the Lagos state government to backtrack appointments made without screening by the State Assembly.
The legislative house made this pronouncement on Tuesday warning that the practice undermines the Constitution and the principle of separation of powers.
Speaking, Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa blamed the Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, for issuing appointment letters without the House’s approval and announced that he would be summoned to explain the violations.
The Assembly also urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to withdraw all letters issued to unconfirmed appointees.
The motion, “Need for Government Appointees to Appear Before the House for Confirmation,” emphasised that Sections 126 and 198 of the 1999 Constitution require certain executive appointees to be screened and approved by the Legislature before assuming office.
Deputy Chief Whip Hon. Setonji David warned that ignoring this constitutional duty threatens accountability.
Hon. Desmond Elliot also described the appointments as an insult to the Assembly’s authority, while Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh highlighted that some agencies operate without legal frameworks.
Concluding the debate, the Speaker directed the Clerk, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, to forward the House resolution to the Governor for appropriate action.
