The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has issued a public advisory urging all users of the state’s inland waterways to remain especially vigilant as the rainy season begins.

According to a statement released on Monday, the agency underlined that the rainy months typically usher in rising water levels, unpredictable currents, and reduced visibility, conditions that pose serious hazards to water transport across Lagos.

The authority drew attention to the elevated dangers of navigating the waterways during this period and laid out a series of essential safety measures aimed at protecting both passengers and boat operators.

“All waterway users are hereby advised to take extra precautions during the rainy season,” the statement read. “This period comes with increased water volume, unstable currents, and foggy weather conditions that complicate navigation and raise the chances of accidents.”

Commuters were urged to strictly observe all safety guidelines and comply with directions issued by LASWA’s Marine Guards stationed across the state.

Boat operators, meanwhile, were reminded to maintain reduced speeds, ensure they do not exceed passenger limits, and suspend trips altogether when faced with adverse weather conditions.

The agency made it clear that travel during the night or in conditions of poor visibility should be avoided entirely. Passengers and operators alike were advised to consult weather forecasts before setting out on any journey.

LASWA also called on passengers to report unsafe conduct or breaches of safety protocols, either to officials on duty or through the agency’s formal reporting channels.

The statement concluded with a firm reassurance that the safeguarding of lives remains LASWA’s highest priority.
