The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has called for enhanced collaboration with the media while cautioning against the publication of defamatory and unverified reports that could undermine public trust in government institutions.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, made the appeal following the outcome of an investigative panel set up to probe allegations by an online platform. The platform had accused the agency’s operatives of extorting ₦100,000 from commercial bus operators along the Coastal Road corridor.

According to Bakare-Oki, the panel’s findings showed that the vehicles involved were apprehended for willful obstruction, in violation of traffic regulations. He added that all penalties imposed were duly paid into government coffers, with evidence of payment presented by the affected drivers during the investigation. He stated that these findings effectively debunked the extortion claims.

He emphasized the critical role of the media in promoting public awareness, traffic discipline, and civic responsibility, describing the press as vital to informed public discourse and democratic governance. However, he stressed that this responsibility must be carried out with professionalism, accuracy, and adherence to ethical standards.

While acknowledging the importance of constructive criticism, Bakare-Oki warned that the spread of unverified and sensational reports poses a serious threat to institutional credibility. He urged media organizations to prioritize fact-checking and due diligence before publication to prevent the spread of misinformation.

Reaffirming the agency’s commitment to transparency, Bakare-Oki noted that LASTMA remains accessible through its official communication channels for verification and clarification. He also highlighted the availability of a toll-free hotline and a dedicated Physical Complaints Unit for public engagement. The agency further called on media stakeholders to uphold the principles of accuracy, balance, and responsibility in reportage to safeguard public trust.
