The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Wednesday has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on driving against traffic following the tragic death of a firefighter at the Trade Fair Complex, Ojo.
Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, explained that preliminary investigations revealed a commercial motorcyclist riding against the approved direction at high speed collided with the firefighter while he attempted to cross the expressway at Abule-Ado.
“The situation worsened when a heavily laden Shacman truck (registration number: JJJ 919 YK) could not brake in time, resulting in the fatal accident,” Bakare-Oki said.
LASTMA officers responded promptly, securing the accident scene with assistance from passersby, and notified the Onireke Police Division to reinforce security.
The motorcyclist fled the scene, while the truck driver abandoned the vehicle and also fled.
The firefighter’s remains were evacuated by colleagues from the Federal Fire Service using an official ambulance.
Bakare-Oki expressed condolences to the bereaved family and vowed LASTMA’s continued support.
He warned that driving against traffic remains a major safety threat across Lagos, urging all motorists and commercial riders to obey directional signs and speed limits to prevent further tragedies.
“LASTMA remains committed to enforcing traffic laws, promoting road safety, and cultivating a disciplined motoring culture throughout Lagos State,” he added.
