The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has deployed 1,700 staff for its round-the-clock traffic monitoring initiative, tagged “Operation Ember Months Stability.” The programme covers all five divisions of Lagos State to ensure smooth vehicular movement, particularly during the busy festive period.

Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, LASTMA’s General Manager, told the newsmen that the agency began the 24-hour monitoring about seven weeks ago, focusing on major routes with high traffic density.

He said, “Recently, we deployed over 850 staff to complement existing personnel along Ikoyi, Victoria Island, and Lekki-Ajah, bringing the total to 1,700 across these key areas. Our teams operate in three shifts: morning (6:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.), afternoon (2:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.), and night (9:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m.).”

Bakare-Oki disclosed that 800 traffic management equipment, including channelisers, barriers, traffic control lights, and reflective jackets, have been mobilised for the initiative.

He added that the 24-hour monitoring has led to quick responses to traffic incidents and improved travel times for residents.

The LASTMA Rescue and Emergency Department has also intensified patrols on major routes, ensuring early removal of obstructions, particularly between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.

“Vehicle movement patterns show heavy morning traffic from the mainland to the island, and our Rescue and Emergency Unit ensures these routes remain unobstructed,” he said.
