The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed that two people were killed and two others severely injured in separate crashes that occurred in the early hours of Monday on Otedola Bridge and the Third Mainland Bridge.
The first crash happened around 2:30 a.m. on the Otedola Bridge section of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, where an unregistered car, reportedly travelling at an unsafe high speed, rammed into a moving, heavily laden trailer.
Both occupants of the car died instantly, while the trailer driver fled the scene. LASTMA’s night-duty team swiftly removed the bodies and cleared the wreckage, with assistance from the police and the Lagos environmental health unit.
A second crash followed at about 5:00 a.m. on the Third Mainland Bridge near the University of Lagos waterfront, involving an empty tanker and a sachet-water distribution van.
Two persons sustained serious injuries and were stabilised by LASAMBUS before being taken to a nearby hospital. LASTMA noted that Lagos continues to witness a troubling rise in road accidents, with 1,006 crashes, 87 deaths and 666 injuries recorded between January and September 2025.
The agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the fatalities as preventable and warned motorists against reckless speeding.
He applauded LASTMA’s 24-hour response teams and urged strict compliance with speed limits to avert further tragedies.
