The Oyo State Government has confirmed a case of Lassa Fever at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, with authorities activating an emergency response to contain the situation.

The case involved a 44-year-old woman who was treated at the facility but died on April 11, 2026. Laboratory confirmation of Lassa Fever was received two days later.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, and released on Thursday, the Commissioner for Health, Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, disclosed that the state government swiftly activated its emergency response mechanisms through the Ministry of Health.

Ajetunmobi charged residents to maintain a high level of environmental hygiene by keeping their homes and surroundings clean, storing food in rodent-proof containers, and disposing of waste properly. She also warned against drying food items on the ground or by the roadside.

“They should take deliberate steps to avoid contact with rodents by sealing holes and other entry points in their homes,” she said. “Good personal hygiene must be practised at all times, including regular hand washing with soap and water.”

Furthermore, anyone experiencing symptoms is advised to promptly report through the designated emergency lines: 0803 374 2052 and 0802 524 5809. All health workers were also enjoined to strictly adhere to infection prevention and control protocols.

The Commissioner reiterated that the state government remains fully committed to protecting the health of all residents. She noted that surveillance has been intensified and all health facilities have been placed on high alert.

Assuring the public that there is no cause for panic, she added, “Lassa Fever is preventable and treatable, especially when detected early.”
