The Lagos State Government has apprehended a man caught illegally dumping refuse along the busy Lekki-Epe Expressway, underscoring its firm stance against environmental violations.
The arrest was confirmed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, through his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
He explained that the suspect was detained by the state’s environmental enforcement team while actively dumping waste on the highway.
“This vehicle was intercepted along the Lekki-Epe Expressway while its driver was caught in the act of illegally dumping refuse. The driver has been arrested, the vehicle seized, and he will be arraigned in court immediately,” Wahab said.
The commissioner issued a stern warning to the public, stressing that the state will continue to take decisive action against all forms of environmental abuse.
“Let this serve as a clear warning: Lagos State will not tolerate acts that endanger our environment and public health. Enforcement is ongoing, and violators will be held fully accountable,” he added.
Wahab also urged residents to adopt responsible waste disposal practices, emphasising that public cooperation is essential to achieving the state’s #CleanerLagos objectives.
“A Cleaner Lagos begins with responsible behaviour,” Wahab said.
This arrest comes as part of an intensified environmental crackdown by the Lagos State Government, which has recently shut down 13 major markets over illegal waste disposal practices and is conducting multiple city-wide clean-up efforts under its #CleanerLagos campaign.
