26 Sept 2025

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has successfully managed over 13,700 incidents between 2008 and 2025, according to the agency’s Permanent Secretary (PS), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.

Speaking at a press conference in Lagos, Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu emphasized that this massive response record underscores the state’s leadership in sub-national emergency management across Nigeria.

The incidents tackled cover a wide and complex range of emergencies, including thousands of fires, severe road accidents, structural collapses, and hazardous material incidents, showcasing LASEMA’s expanded operational capacity and its effectiveness in maintaining stability across the densely populated metropolis.

The announcement came as the state prepares to host the maiden State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Conference 2025, in partnership with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, noted that Lagos was chosen to host the event due to its proven success model in disaster management, which other states aim to replicate.

The three-day conference, scheduled to run from Thursday, October 2, to Saturday, October 4, will bring together a critical mass of industry stakeholders, including emergency managers, policymakers, security institutions, private sector leaders, and development partners from all 36 Nigerian states and the FCT.

The opening ceremony and high-level dialogue will take place at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Maryland, Lagos. A core component of the event will be a live simulation exercise at the Lagos State Emergency and Relief/Rescue Camp, Igando, which will demonstrate coordinated multi-agency response to complex scenarios, emphasizing Nigeria’s commitment to resilience.

Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu concluded that these achievements are a testament to the effectiveness of Lagos’ collaboration with NEMA, its strategic deployment of technology and training, and its focus on fostering robust community resilience.

The upcoming conference serves as a platform to share these lessons and collectively elevate the standards of emergency management across the nation.
