The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce electric-powered boats into the Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) fleet before the end of 2026, as part of efforts to reduce transport fares and promote environmentally sustainable mobility.
The Managing Director of LAGFERRY, Hon. Abdoulbaq Ladi-Balogun, disclosed this in a statement shared on the Lagos State Government’s official X handle on Wednesday.
According to Ladi-Balogun, the deployment of electric vessels is aimed at providing a more affordable, efficient and eco-friendly water transportation system, while easing the burden of rising transport costs and persistent traffic congestion across the state.
He explained that electric boats are cheaper to operate and maintain than conventional vessels, adding that the lower operational costs would reflect in reduced fares for commuters.
Describing the initiative as both an economic and environmental necessity, the LAGFERRY boss said it aligns with the state government’s broader transportation reforms and climate action goals.
“The Lagos State Government is planning to introduce electric-powered boats into the LAGFERRY fleet within the year, as part of its commitment to providing affordable, sustainable and eco-friendly public transportation for residents,” he stated.
Ladi-Balogun also noted the growing acceptance of water transportation among Lagos residents, revealing that since operations commenced on February 4, 2020, LAGFERRY has transported about 4.4 million passengers.
He described the trend as the rise of a “Watermania lifestyle,” where commuters increasingly park their vehicles at jetties and rely on ferries for daily movement.
He further disclosed that the service recorded a major surge in demand during the 2025 Detty December festivities, with daily trips increasing tenfold as residents and visitors used ferries to access beaches and coastal resorts across the state.
