The Lagos State Government has sealed off two public toilets in Surulere and Lagos Island over illegal discharge of untreated waste into public drains and canals.
The enforcement, carried out by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) on Tuesday, targeted a facility located at No. 68, Jinadu Street, Surulere, for discharging untreated faecal matter into a nearby canal.
In a related development, another public toilet situated at Marina Under Bridge on Lagos Island was also shut down for deliberately pumping raw sewage and untreated wastewater into public drainage systems.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed that the actions of the operators constituted environmental pollution, public nuisance, and a serious threat to human health emphasising that the State Government remains committed to enforcing environmental laws and maintaining public health standards across Lagos.
He urged residents and business operators to adopt proper wastewater management and hygiene practices, warning that violations would attract sanctions, including possible prosecution.
The government also encouraged members of the public to report environmental infractions through official LSWMO communication channels as part of ongoing efforts to ensure a cleaner and more sustainable environment, aligning with the state’s #ZeroToleranceLagos campaign aimed at curbing environmental abuse and promoting responsible waste management practices.
