Lagos: Reckless driving blamed as five die in Badagry road crash

Five people were killed in a crash involving a car and a truck on the Badagry Expressway in Lagos on Saturday morning.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said it received a distress call at 5:16 am and sent its Dolphin Team from the Igando base to Sawmill, near Mowo Bus Stop, where the accident happened.

On arrival, responders found that a Toyota Camry with registration number FKJ 630KS had collided head-on with an Iveco truck with registration number T28081 LA.

In a statement, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said preliminary findings showed that the Camry driver was speeding and driving recklessly. He said the driver lost control, crossed into the opposite lane and rammed into the oncoming truck.

The statement said all five victims were adult males and occupants of the Camry. Their remains were recovered, bagged and handed over to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps.

Responders at the scene included LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the Federal Road Safety Corps and police from the Morogbo Division.

Two tow trucks were used to remove the wreckage, after which the vehicles were taken to the Morogbo Police Division. The road was later cleared and reopened to traffic.

Oke-Osanyintolu sympathised with the families of the dead and urged motorists to avoid speeding, wrongful overtaking and other unsafe driving habits, especially in the early hours of the day.

He said LASEMA remained committed to quick emergency response and inter-agency cooperation under the state government’s T.H.E.M.E.S+ Agenda, aimed at protecting lives and property.
