Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Mexican Ambassador to Nigeria, Alfredo Miranda-Ortiz, have committed to deepening the bilateral relationship between Lagos State and Mexico to unlock new economic opportunities and mutual benefits.

‎During a courtesy visit to the Lagos House in Ikeja on Monday, March 9, 2026, both leaders emphasized the potential for collaborative growth.

Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted his administration’s THEMES+ developmental agenda, which is specifically designed to enhance the state’s hospitality, improve liveability, and attract foreign direct investment.

‎A major milestone in this partnership is the opening of an Honorary Consulate of Mexico in Lagos, led by Honorary Consul Mr. Abiodun Otunola.

The Governor commended this move, noting that a physical diplomatic presence in the state will streamline business partnerships, sporting exchanges, and tourism development.

‎Ambassador Miranda-Ortiz praised the state’s economic resilience and its role as the financial engine of Nigeria.

He revealed that Mexico, which currently boasts 53 Free Trade Markets, is eager to work with Lagos to expand its footprint in the West African market.

‎“Mexico is poised to strengthen its economy by working collaboratively with Lagos,” the Ambassador stated, noting that the state has consistently proven its capacity for large-scale economic expansion.

‎The meeting concluded with both parties agreeing to explore specific sectors for cooperation, including tourism, leveraging Lagos’ cultural hub status alongside Mexico’s world-renowned expertise.

They also discussed trade opportunities via Mexico’s extensive free trade network and shared ideas on addressing urban security and infrastructure challenges common to both regions.
