Lagos launches plans to rebuild police stations destroyed during #EndSARS unrest

9 Dec 2025

Lagos State has begun preparations to reconstruct police stations destroyed during the 2020 #EndSARS protests, as part of wider efforts to strengthen security infrastructure across the state.

The initiative, coordinated by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF), was announced alongside plans for the 19th Annual Town Hall Meeting on Security, scheduled for December 11, 2025, at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island.

The #EndSARS protests, initially peaceful demonstrations against the now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) over alleged brutality, later turned violent, leading to the destruction of police stations, courts, and other public facilities across Lagos.

The Executive Secretary of the LSSTF, Ayodeji Ogunsan, disclosed that the remaining damaged police stations have been inspected and that reconstruction work will commence soon.

“This is part of a wider strategy to restore operational capacity to security agencies and improve safety for residents,” he said during a media briefing at the LSSTF office in Alausa, Ikeja.

Ogunsan, who assumed office in October, pledged to ensure transparency, expand the Fund’s support base, and guarantee that donations directly improve security at the community level.

Over the years, the LSSTF has provided patrol vehicles, communication equipment, bullet-proof vests, marine assets, and specialised training through contributions from both individuals and corporations.

He also announced the launch of a retail donation campaign to allow every Lagos resident to contribute to security, regardless of the amount.

“Whether N500 or N50 million, what matters is participation. Security is personal, and everyone has a role to play,” Ogunsan said.

In addition, he outlined plans for awareness campaigns, digital donation platforms, youth-focused programmes, volunteer initiatives, and community engagement, while encouraging donations in kind, including surveillance equipment, emergency response tools, and data technologies.

Professionals in cybersecurity, engineering, criminology, psychology, and data science have been invited to volunteer their expertise to strengthen the state’s security architecture.

The upcoming town hall will feature a review of LSSTF’s activities, emerging crime trends, and new security priorities unveiled by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
