The Lagos State Government has intensified its safety operations in the Ikola community with the controlled demolition of structures erected beneath high-tension electricity lines.
The exercise, led by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) in collaboration with the Lagos State Police Command and the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), aims to reduce the risks of electrocution, fire outbreaks, and structural collapse in the area.
This intervention followed recent communal tensions in Ikola and the discovery of extensive informal settlements within the high-voltage power-line corridor.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu stated that the operation focuses on clearing structures erected within the statutory right-of-way of electricity transmission lines.
The state government clarified that the exercise does not target any specific ethnic group or community; rather, it was undertaken to address a dangerous structural situation that exposes residents to avoidable risks.
LASEMA noted that affected residents received adequate notice and sufficient time to evacuate and retrieve their belongings before the demolition commenced.
The agency added that heavy recovery equipment has been deployed to clear the structures and restore the power-line corridor to its intended purpose.
It further stated that personnel involved in the operation are safe, and the situation remains calm and under control.
The state government noted that a recent clash between Hausa and Yoruba residents in Ikola further highlighted the need to address broader public safety concerns in the community.
It stressed that while residents have a right to shelter and a livelihood, these rights must be balanced with the collective responsibility of preventing avoidable loss of life.
The government also pledged continued engagement with community leaders, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders in Ikola and across the state to promote peaceful coexistence and ensure compliance with urban planning regulations.
Oke-Osanyintolu urged residents to desist from constructing buildings beneath power lines, gas pipelines, and other restricted corridors, advising them to consult relevant authorities before embarking on any construction projects.
The government stated that the exercise forms part of its broader efforts to build a safer, more orderly Lagos while protecting lives and enforcing existing regulations.
