The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights of children in adoption, guardianship, and fostering, vowing never to compromise on their welfare.

Speaking at a stakeholder engagement with Judges, Magistrates, and Social Welfare Officers, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr Mobolaji Abubakre Ogunlende, restated that the interests of children remain paramount in all government processes.

Represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Pharm. (Mrs) Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu, Ogunlende said: “The Child’s Rights Law of Lagos State is the backbone of our work. We ensure that every child is placed in a home where their best interest is guaranteed.”

He explained that Lagos has intentionally kept the adoption process rigorous in order to uphold the highest international standards and safeguard the welfare of children.

“Our priority is to ensure every child is nurtured in a safe, loving environment. This aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda, especially the Social Inclusion Pillar,” he added.

In a presentation delivered by Mrs Saheed Adebambo, Director of the Adoption Services Department, the Ministry announced the upgrade of its Adoption Unit to a full-fledged department.

Adebambo also revealed that the state had commenced the automation of the adoption process to simplify access for prospective adopters, who will soon be able to complete the entire process online.

She stressed that the state is committed to placing children only in homes where they will be properly cared for, noting that the upbringing of today’s children determines the shape of future society.

The government said the meeting aimed to strengthen collaboration between the judiciary and social services to implement child-centred policies and improve outcomes across the state.
