Lagos businessman missing/wanted after alleged unlawful gathering raid

LAGOS — The whereabouts of Lagos-based businessman Hakeem Olalekan Adegoke height 193cm black in complexion with brown eyes remain unknown following a late-night raid on an alleged LGBTQ gathering in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos State.

According to local sources, the gathering, which reportedly took place on August 24, 2024, was disrupted by members of a vigilante group called(Oodua People Congress)after receiving information that individuals connected to an LGBTQ support network were meeting at the location. The raid caused panic among attendees, with several individuals fleeing the premises while others were reportedly detained.

Mr. Adegoke’s name later surfaced in connection with the gathering, and residents say he has not been seen since the incident. Attempts to reach him have reportedly been unsuccessful, and his current whereabouts remain unknown.

Under Nigeria’s Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, 2014, individuals found guilty of engaging in same-sex relationships, participating in LGBTQ organizations, or attending related gatherings may face severe penalties. The law provides for up to 14 years’ imprisonment for same-sex relationships and up to 10 years’ imprisonment for membership in or support of LGBTQ groups.

As of the time of this report, the circumstances surrounding the incident and Mr. Adegoke’s disappearance remain unclear.
