The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially declared its 2027 governorship race open to all qualified party members, signaling a major shift toward a more competitive and inclusive candidate selection process.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the Lagos APC Chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, who emphasized that the party has not endorsed any aspirant for the forthcoming elections.
“Our primaries are for all members. All available positions are open for contest as the party has no anointed candidate for any seat,” Ojelabi stated.
This development sets the stage for a potentially wide-open race to succeed the incumbent governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the party leadership, candidates will emerge primarily through direct primaries, in line with provisions of the 2026 Electoral Act. This system allows registered party members to participate directly in choosing candidates. However, Ojelabi noted that consensus arrangements would still be accommodated where broadly accepted by stakeholders.
Political observers say the dual approach could heighten internal competition within the party while also leaving room for negotiation among influential blocs.
The chairman further disclosed that aspirants would be responsible for financing their campaigns, including payment of nomination and administrative fees, which he stressed are non-refundable.
Despite the financial demands, Ojelabi assured party members of a level playing field, pledging a process that would be free, fair, and transparent.
In a notable move, the party also promised “special consideration” for female aspirants, a step seen as aligning with ongoing calls for greater gender inclusion in Nigerian politics.
Party members have been urged to maintain unity and decorum as preparations intensify, while awaiting further guidelines from the national leadership.
“We will not engage in imposition of candidates and neither will we influence the outcome of the primaries,” Ojelabi added, reinforcing the APC’s commitment to internal democracy.
