The Lagos State Government has announced temporary road closures in parts of Lagos Island ahead of the colourful Lagos Fanti Carnival scheduled for Monday, as part of measures to prevent disruptions.

This was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, noting that the closures will begin at 7:00 a.m. on Monday to ensure a smooth and safe carnival procession.

According to the ministry, the affected routes include King George V Road at the junction by Mobil Filling Station, Onikan Roundabout inbound to TBS, Flagstaff House inbound to TBS, Outer Marina by State House inbound to TBS, Campbell Street by the Old Defence Building, and Catholic Mission Street by St. Nicholas Hospital.

The ministry explained that the temporary restrictions are part of efforts to create a secure and well-organised environment for participants and spectators expected to throng the Lagos Island corridor for the annual cultural celebration.

Motorists and residents were advised to plan their movements accordingly and use alternative routes during the period, while the government appealed for patience and understanding.

It added that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has mapped out diversion routes to ease vehicular movement and reduce congestion around the carnival axis.

Vehicles coming from Obalende and heading toward Onikan Roundabout will be redirected to Zone 2, while those approaching from Bonny Camp toward McEwen Bridge, as well as from Flagstaff House to TBS, will be diverted to Obalende Bridge.

Similarly, motorists approaching from Outer Marina to TBS will also be redirected to Obalende Bridge to ensure free movement around the carnival route.

The ministry noted that the traffic plan is designed to minimise disruption to daily activities, particularly for commuters and businesses within the Lagos Island area.

It expressed appreciation to residents and motorists for their anticipated cooperation, noting that the measure is necessary to guarantee a successful and hitch-free celebration.

“The state government regrets any inconvenience this may cause and appreciates the cooperation of the public,” the statement added.

The Lagos Fanti Carnival, a historic cultural event in Lagos, is expected to attract residents, tourists, and cultural enthusiasts, showcasing music, dance, and vibrant displays that highlight the city’s rich Afro-Brazilian heritage.
