The renowned Barcelona Youth Academy, La Masia has produced yet another first-team debutant as young Catalan defender Xavi Espart made his professional bow for FC Barcelona.
The milestone occurred on March 10, 2026, during a high-stakes Champions League clash against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.
Espart was introduced late in the match, replacing Ronald Araujo to help anchor the defense after a late penalty from Lamine Yamal had leveled the score. Despite the intensity of the European stage, the teenager displayed remarkable composure and technical assurance, helping the Blaugrana see out the draw.
Speaking to the club’s official media following the traditional debut photo in front of the La Masia sign, an emotional Espart described the experience as a dream come true.
He admitted that the adrenaline was surging as he stepped onto the pitch, noting that he could hardly believe the moment had finally arrived.
“I’ve always dreamed of being in the first team,” Espart shared.
He credited his smooth transition to the presence of fellow academy graduates in the locker room, stating that their support allowed him to play his natural game without feeling the weight of the occasion.
The right-back also expressed profound gratitude to manager Hansi Flick for showing such faith in a young player during a crucial Champions League fixture.
Espart’s journey to the first team began in the summer of 2015 when he joined the club at the U-10 level from UE Vilassar de Mar.
A versatile and disciplined leader, he served as the fourth captain of the development side and was a vital component of the U-19 squad that secured a historic treble.
While he is relishing the moment, the 28-year-old who turns 29 in May made it clear that he views this debut as merely the starting point.
He emphasized his commitment to continued hard work and training, vowing to be ready whenever his next opportunity with the senior squad arises.
