…Over 18,000 bags of fertiliser, 175MT of seeds distributed

The Kwara State Government has flagged off the distribution of farm inputs to 3,000 farmers across the state in a renewed effort to boost grain cultivation and advance livestock development, especially in rural communities.
The intervention, coordinated by the Ministry of Livestock Development, is in partnership with Arzikin Noma Nigeria Ltd, international supply chain organisation IDH, and Olam Nigeria. The launch took place in Apata Alaje, Banni Community, Kaiama Local Government Area.
Speaking during the flag-off, the Commissioner for Livestock Development, Mrs Oloruntoyosi Thomas, said the programme targets the cultivation of sorghum and soybean to improve animal feed production, promote peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders, and strengthen the state’s agricultural value chain.
“The current partnership with Arzikin, IDH and Olam is timely. It’s focused on cultivating grains for both human and animal consumption, with emphasis on livestock feed. This will help reduce the tension and frequent conflicts between farmers and herders,” she said.
Thomas said the broader goal of the initiative aligns with the state’s agenda to create agro-industrial hubs, develop value-addition centres, and retain more processed goods within the state.
The input package includes 18,000 bags of fertiliser, 6,000 litres each of three agrochemicals, 75 metric tonnes of sorghum seed, and 100 metric tonnes of soybean seed.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Aliyu Kora Sabi, lauded the choice of Apata Alaje as host community, describing it as a strategic location to promote harmony among farming and pastoralist communities.
He urged beneficiaries to use the inputs effectively and support government efforts to stabilise the sector.
The Chief Executive Officer of Arzikin Noma Nigeria Ltd, Mr Adeoluwa, said the project was designed to ensure farmers have access to inputs, training, and ready markets. He assured that Olam Nigeria, a key off-taker, was already on ground to purchase produce after harvest.
On behalf of IDH, Dr Abah described the initiative as part of a long-term strategy to transform agricultural supply chains, improve farmer incomes, and generate rural employment.
“Our goal is to make agriculture more sustainable. This partnership will be maintained and scaled for long-term benefits to all stakeholders,” he said.
Some of the beneficiaries, Mrs Asmau Muhammad and Mr Iliasu Saka, expressed gratitude to the government and promised to put the inputs to good use for maximum productivity.
