The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Kwara State has suspended its relationship with the state council over the non-recognition of its elected officials, officials said.
In a communiqué issued at the end of its monthly congress last weekend at the chapel secretariat, the leadership and members described the decision as a necessary measure to protect their integrity and that of the chapel leadership.
The communiqué, jointly signed by chairman Biola Azeez and secretary Mosunmola Ayobami, stated that the congress resolved to boycott all press conferences and media-related activities organised by the state council until further notice.
The document said the move followed the state council’s refusal to recognise the leadership of the Correspondents’ Chapel after a constitutional and widely accepted election held on November 1, 2025, and the subsequent inauguration of the chapel executive.
The communiqué recalled several efforts made to resolve lingering issues over the election, including interventions by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, the governor’s counsellor, the national leadership of the NUJ, and other well-meaning individuals, none of which yielded results.
“Following extensive deliberations at its March congress, members of the Correspondents’ Chapel unanimously resolved to suspend their relationship with the Kwara State Council of the NUJ with immediate effect,” the communiqué said.
The congress noted that the strained relationship largely stems from the actions and disposition of the chairman and secretary of the state council.
It also commended the overwhelming majority of NUJ members who have shown solidarity and support for the Correspondents’ Chapel, describing it as a stand against the overbearing attitude of the council leadership.
