Kwara APC ward congresses: A triumph of unity or a crisis of continuity?

The Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) like many other APC states has concluded its ward congresses across all 193 political wards, marking a critical step in the party’s internal reorganization ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The exercise, which was monitored by the National Secretariat’s Screening and Appeals Committee, was characterized by a carnival-like atmosphere in major hubs like Ilorin, Asa, Ekiti, and Baruten.

Central to the success of the congress was the adoption of an affirmation strategy, a method designed to minimize rancor by reconfirming leaders who had demonstrated merit.

According to the Kwara State APC Chairman, Prince Sunday Fagbemi, the new leaders emerged through a constitutional process that ensures the party’s grassroots structure remains unbroken.

“This signifies progress and togetherness,” Fagbemi noted, asserting that the smooth transition foretells a major victory for the party in 2027.

The leadership confirmed that all participants were rigorously screened to ensure they met the party’s standards of integrity before being reaffirmed. Reports from all 12 wards in Ilorin West Local Government indicated a smooth, rancor-free process, with elders, women, and youth wings participating in what has been described as a collective decision.

Prince Fagbemi extended commendations to Governor Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, credited with creating the enabling environment that allowed for such a peaceful exercise. By opting for reaffirmation rather than contested elections in most wards, the party leadership effectively signaled a desire for stability during a delicate political season.
However, beneath the surface of this perceived unity, political analysts are observing emerging fractures. While the party celebrates the reaffirmation of existing executives, some stakeholders have expressed concern that keeping the same leadership in place since 2019 could lead to organizational fatigue.

There is a growing sentiment among certain circles that fresh perspectives may be needed to navigate the complexities of the 2027 polls.

More significantly, a looming agitation for a power shift is gaining traction. Since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, the Kwara Central and Southern Senatorial Districts have largely occupied the Ahmadu Bello Government House.

Stakeholders in the Northern Senatorial District are now increasingly vocal in their demand for the governorship seat to be zoned to their region in 2027, arguing that equity and collective bargaining are essential for the party’s continued dominance.

This analysis suggests that while the ward congresses were a technical success, the APC leadership must now balance the need for continuity with the urgent demands for inclusivity.

As one stakeholder remarked, “Politics is a game of numbers and collective interest.” For the APC to replicate its past successes, it will need to address the internal pressures regarding rotation and generational change. The success of the ward congresses has provided a solid foundation, but the true test of the party’s unity and togetherness will be how it manages the competing aspirations of its three senatorial districts as the 2027 campaign cycle begins in earnest.
