The Kogi Bureau of Statistics has stressed the importance of credible data for effective governance and sustainable development.
The Statistician-General of the bureau, Mrs Irewole Ayo-Alani, who stated this at a dialogue meeting with stakeholders on Monday in Lokoja, said the agency remained the authoritative custodian of official statistics in the state.
According to Ayo-Alani, the bureau coordinates the state statistical system and advises both the state and local governments on development planning and statistical matters.
“The bureau works closely with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders in collecting, compiling, analysing and disseminating statistical information.
“The agency maintains a comprehensive socio-economic databank to support planning, budgeting and decision-making across the state,” she said.
The statistician-general stressed that reliable data remained essential for identifying societal needs, improving governance and guiding government policies and programmes.
She noted that reports generated from data collection exercises would help the government identify challenges and provide practical solutions for development.
The statistician-general emphasised the need for standard statistical methodologies and modern technology to ensure credible and reliable data collection.
She, however, identified inadequate funding, shortage of professional manpower, poor public sensitisation and lack of modern equipment as some of the major challenges facing the bureau.
“Many residents often misunderstand the purpose of data collection exercises and sometimes provide inaccurate information.
“No government can single-handedly fund statistics effectively,” she stated.
She emphasised the need for collaboration among government agencies, NGOs, donor organisations and other stakeholders.
Ayo-Alani advocated increased digitalisation, regular staff training and stronger inter-agency collaboration to improve timely and accurate data collection.
She commended Gov. Ahmed Ododo for efforts toward addressing manpower shortages and improving the operations of the bureau.
