During President Tinubu’s state visit to the United Kingdom, King Charles III has lauded Nigeria as an influential diplomatic voice and an economic force on the global stage.

Speaking at a banquet held in honor of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu on Wednesday, the British monarch underscored Nigeria’s pivotal role within the Commonwealth and the broader international community.

The King characterized Nigeria’s leadership as a significant responsibility in an era of rapid global change.

Highlighting the deep-rooted ties between the two nations, he cited shared legal systems and language as the foundation for a trust-based partnership. He poignantly utilized a Yoruba proverb, “rain does not fall on one roof alone” to illustrate the interconnected nature of global challenges and the necessity of the Commonwealth alliance.

“Your nation is an economic powerhouse and a cultural force,” the Monarch stated, adding that with a combined Commonwealth GDP forecast to surpass $20 trillion, the alliance remains more relevant than ever.

He further invoked a Hausa proverb, noting that when the music changes, so does the dance, as a call for both nations to learn new dance steps together in the face of modern complexities.

In his response, President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, with a particular emphasis on security cooperation.

The President highlighted the volatile security situation in the Sahel and its impact on West African stability, noting that Nigeria carries a heavy burden in safeguarding the region.

“Partnership with the United Kingdom remains essential in confronting these threats,” Tinubu said, indicating that his upcoming meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer would focus on practical collaborations to combat terrorism.

Despite regional instability, the President expressed confidence in the Nigerian spirit, describing the nation as one filled with vibrant young people dreaming big and determined to realize their full potential on the world stage.
