Keir Starmer resigns as UK Prime Minister

United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as both leader of the Labour Party and head of the government, marking the end of his two-year tenure following his historic election victory.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer acknowledged that his parliamentary party no longer views him as the right person to lead them into the next general election.

He emphasized that he accepted this collective decision with good grace, maintaining that his choices have always prioritized the best interests of the country.

During his address, Starmer outlined his administration’s major accomplishments, highlighting economic growth, falling National Health Service waiting lists, strengthened protections for workers and renters, and a significant increase in defense spending.

He expressed immense pride in reforming the Labour Party over the past six years by addressing internal issues like antisemitism and restoring public trust.

Visibly emotional, he concluded by thanking his cabinet, colleagues, civil servants, and his family, noting his eagerness to spend more time as a husband and father.

The formal process to select his successor will begin on July 9, when the Labour National Executive Committee opens nominations. Starmer intends to remain in office until the leadership contest concludes to ensure a smooth transition of power.

If Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham runs unopposed, he could assume office around mid-July, just before the parliamentary summer recess. However, if other candidates enter the race, a full contest will take place, with a new prime minister expected to take charge by the end of August before Parliament returns in September.
