The Kano state government has pledged closer collaboration with the Federal Government to enhance livestock value chain.
The state also announced plans to establish a modern abattoir to boost meat and diary production for domestic consumption and export.
The state deputy governor, Mr Murtala Garo, said this during a courtesy visit by the Minister of Livestock Development, Mr Idi Maiha, on Saturday in Kano.
He said that the collaboration would focus on livestock production, poultry, fisheries, dairy development, hides and skins, and other activities across the livestock value chain.
According to Garo, the state government is working with the ministry and prospective investors to establish a modern abattoir, and upgrade the existing one, which served the state for over six decades.
He said that the project would facilitate processing of livestock products to meet international standards, create employment opportunities for youths, as well as revive the hides and skin industry
The deputy governor said the partnership would also strengthen poultry production through improved egg and fishery storage facilities, and enhance dairy production by expanding milk processing and storage.
“The partnership will assist to improve households’ incomes and create jobs,” he said.
Garo described the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development as a major step toward unlocking the economic potential of the sector, noting that Kano had established a corresponding ministry to complement the initiative.
Earlier, Maiha said his visit was part of efforts to strengthen collaboration with the Kano government to fast-track implementation of the federal government’s livestock development agenda.
Maiha expressed confidence in Kano’s capacity to drive livestock transformation, citing its agricultural potential and water resources as key advantages for implementing the ministry’s development blueprint.
He commended the state government for establishing a corresponding ministry, and reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to working with the state to develop the livestock sector for economic growth and job creation.
