JUST IN: Power outage as national grid collapses

10 Sept 2025

Nigeria’s electricity grid collapsed on Wednesday.

This has triggered a nationwide blackout in what marks the first system failure of 2025.

Official data from the Independent System Operator showed power generation crashing from 2,917.83 megawatts to barely 1.5 megawatts between 11 a.m. and noon.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the collapse in a public notice issued on its officials X handle (formerly Twitter) at 11:23 a.m.

It reads, “Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 a.m. today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas.

“Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilised.”

The latest disruption renews concerns over the fragility of Nigeria’s transmission network.

On February 12, parts of the country were thrown into darkness when the grid went down, though the Transmission Company of Nigeria denied reports that it collapsed twice in one day.

Earlier in January, the same company dismissed similar claims.

In July, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission announced there had been no recorded collapse in the first quarter of the year but warned the system operator to improve coordination.

Nigeria’s grid remains unstable. In 2024, there were 11 nationwide collapses, leaving millions without power and reinforcing doubts over government promises of reliable electricity supply.
