IWD: SEC DG commends Women’s role in capital market growth

9 Mar 2026

The Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Dr. Emomotimi Agama, has hailed the significant contributions of women to the Nigerian capital market.

Speaking during an International Women’s Day event held on Monday, March 9, 2026, Dr. Agama praised the resilience, professionalism, and intellect of the commission’s female staff, noting that their dedication has been a cornerstone of national development and economic stability.

This year’s celebration, themed “Give to Gain,” was framed by Dr. Agama as a reflection of the wealth built through mentorship, contribution, and inclusion.

He observed that women within the SEC have transitioned from waiting for opportunities to actively creating them, effectively building the leadership tables at which they now sit.

He specifically highlighted that their foresight in navigating complex economic shifts has resulted in a more robust, transparent, and inclusive market. By sharing expertise and advocating for inclusive finance, these professionals have strengthened the broader economy while setting a powerful example for future generations.

The Director General extended specific recognition to female leaders at the highest levels of the commission, including Executive Commissioners Frana Chukwuogor and Hajia Samiya Hassan Usman, as well as Non-Executive Commissioner Omolola Bridget Oloworaran.

He emphasized that the ability of women to manage multifaceted responsibilities as mothers, wives, and professionals serves as a constant source of inspiration.

Reflecting on his personal life, Dr. Agama credited the women in his own family as pillars of strength who have shaped his leadership style and character.
During the event, Ms. Frana Chukwuogor, the Executive Commissioner for Legal and Enforcement, used the platform to issue a stern warning against illegal financial operators.

She urged all Nigerians, particularly women, to remain vigilant and avoid Ponzi schemes that promise unrealistic returns.

Ms. Chukwuogor stressed that there are numerous legitimate investment products available within the regulated capital market and encouraged citizens to report suspicious operators to the commission to protect the integrity of the financial system.

Complementing this call for financial discipline, Executive Commissioner for Operations, Mr. Bola Ajomale, noted that the multitasking skills inherent in many women are essential for achieving a world-class capital market.

He urged female staff to embrace their roles as mentors to ensure a legacy of excellence. Adding a practical dimension to the discussion, Mrs. Toyin Alasi, CEO of MoneyWise International, spoke on the necessity of moving beyond mere income generation toward intentional saving and long-term wealth creation, noting that financial independence is driven by behavior and discipline rather than just basic knowledge.

The program concluded with a focus on holistic well-being, as Public Health Specialist Dr. Chika Anozie advised women to prioritize their health through regular medical check-ups and stress management.

She pointed out that the physical and mental demands of balancing home and office life require women to be proactive about their fitness and nutrition.
