The Interfaith Youth Council of Nigeria (IYCN) has called for an independent and transparent investigation into the death of nurse Mary Habila, urging the public to avoid speculation while official inquiries are ongoing.
Speaking at a press conference in Bauchi, the council cautioned against premature conclusions and inflammatory comments that could undermine the integrity of the investigation.
In a statement signed by its leader, Comrade Moses S. Moses, the IYCN called for a thorough and professional probe based solely on evidence and completely free from political interference or undue influence.
The council noted that Habila had worked as a healthcare professional in the household of the Minister of Works for about three years.
According to the IYCN, a report from the Federal Ministry of Works indicated that she maintained a cordial and professional relationship with the minister during her period of service.
However, the council stressed that this information should not influence the final outcome of the legal investigation.
The group appealed to political leaders, media organizations, and civil society groups to exercise restraint and allow the relevant authorities to conduct their investigations without interference.
“In any society governed by the rule of law, criminal responsibility can only be determined through a credible investigation,” the council stated, emphasizing that justice must be pursued in strict alignment with due process.
The IYCN extended its deepest condolences to the family of Mary Habila and urged Nigerians to remain calm while allowing the legal system to take its course.
