The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed claims that its Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, operates or has ever used an account on X (formerly Twitter), describing the allegations as false and misleading.
In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman, Mr. Adedayo Oketola, the Commission labeled the viral claims suggesting that the Chairman endorsed a partisan post as entirely baseless fabrications. I
The Commission clarified that Prof. Amupitan does not own a personal account on the platform and has never engaged in partisan commentary in either a private or official capacity.
The Commission described the circulation of the alleged post as a coordinated attempt to undermine the Chairman’s integrity and the neutrality of the electoral body during a critical period of electoral reform.
INEC also raised concerns over cybercriminals creating fraudulent accounts in the Chairman’s name to mislead the public.
The Commission further noted that it is currently working with security agencies and cyber-intelligence units to track those responsible for this identity theft.
It warned that individuals found culpable will face prosecution under the Cybercrimes Act, which criminalizes the spread of manipulated digital content.
