If you work for the federal government or you have a family member who works with the Federal civil service, here is good news you need to know about.
The federal government this week announced new welfare reforms that will make civil servants earn more than their monthly pay check.
1. Retirement bonus
Effective January 1, 2026, retiring won’t just mean waiting for your monthly pension. When you retire, you will receive a one-time exit package equal to 100% of your full annual emoluments. This is separate from the regular pension.
2. 100% increase in DTA
Have you heard someone complain of DTA? DTA means Duty Tour Allowance (DTA) and it is usually given to civil servants when they are assigned on a work trip or training.
Previously, DTA was often tied to travelling out of your station. However, workers will now get 100% DTA for any approved training program.
Notably, even if the training is in the same city where you live (e.g., training in Abuja while living in Abuja), you are still entitled to the full allowance.
3. N10bn housing loan
Owning a home is often a thought of impossibilty for many Nigerians. However, a new ₦10 billion housing loan scheme has been set up specifically for civil servants across all cadres.
4. Introduction of compensation for work injury
If a worker gets injured, falls ill because of their job, or passes away in active service, there is now a dedicated fund to provide financial support to them or their families.
Note: These new reforms cover workers under the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS) and the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS).
