Gov. Nasir Idris of Kebbi, has commended the World Assembly of Muslim Youths (WAMY) for providing free medical services, including surgeries, to residents of the state.
Idris made the commendation when he received a WAMY medical team comprising more than 30 doctors from different parts of the world in Birnin Kebbi during a courtesy visit on Monday.
The governor described the intervention as a significant humanitarian initiative capable of improving the health and wellbeing of residents, particularly those who cannot afford specialized medical treatment.
“This is a clear sign that WAMY is doing great charity work for humanity.
“I want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the leadership of WAMY and the Nasara Foundation for this gesture, so that our good people will benefit from it,” Idris said.
He assured the medical team that the state government would continue to provide an enabling environment for humanitarian and healthcare interventions.
Idris said his administration remained willing to partner with WAMY and other organisations on initiatives aimed at improving the wellbeing of the people.
“The government of Kebbi and its people are very happy and appreciate this programme.
“The government will continue to create an enabling environment for this type of programme,” he said.
The governor also commended the doctors and other medical personnel for offering their expertise, time and resources to provide essential healthcare services to residents.
He described their intervention as a demonstration of compassion and commitment to humanity, noting that WAMY had continued to undertake humanitarian activities in different parts of the world.
“Our doors are open. In whatever way you want us to partner, not only on this medical outreach, the government of Kebbi is ever ready to continue to partner with you,” Idris added.
Earlier, the Executive Director of WAMY, Hisham Muhammad, said the organisation had deployed the medical experts to Kebbi for a week-long general surgery outreach, which commenced on Saturday.
Muhammad said about 1,500 patients were expected to benefit from free surgical operations and other medical services during the exercise.
He said the team was led by Dr. Abdul-Latif Barnawi, a General Surgeon, and comprised Specialists in various medical fields.
Barnawi said the exercise would focus mainly on general surgery, gynaecology and obstetrics, and paediatric surgery.
He said the team would attend to various women’s health and obstetric cases, perform necessary surgeries and provide patients with medications and post-operative care.
According to him, WAMY plans to expand the scope and number of beneficiaries of its subsequent medical missions to Kebbi, including increasing the number of medical specialties available to residents.
Newsmen report that the outreach, organised by WAMY in collaboration with the Nasara Foundation and the Kebbi Government, is expected to provide free surgical procedures to about 1,500 patients during the week-long exercise.
