Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has ordered the immediate closure of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, following the killing of a 300-level student and a wave of violent attacks on campus.
The state government said the closure was necessary to prevent further loss of lives and property after a criminal attack at the university’s student hostel last week.
In a statement issued by the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, authorities said the safety and security of citizens, particularly students, remain a top priority.
“The Niger State Government expresses deep sadness over the unfortunate incident. Measures are being taken to address the situation swiftly,” the statement read.
The government urged members of the university community to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperate fully with security agencies during the closure period.
“While working diligently to restore peace and security, the government assures that every effort is being made to investigate the security breaches and bring the perpetrators to justice,” it added.
The statement reiterated the government’s commitment to upholding law and order, and protecting lives and property within the university and across the state.
