I will not contest for Presidency again after 2027 – Atiku declares

15 Apr 2026

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has announced that the 2027 presidential election will mark his final attempt at the Presidency.

Atiku made this disclosure during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Wednesday.

He stated clearly that the upcoming election would be his last outing in the political arena having contested for the nation’s highest office since 1992.

When questioned about why Nigerians should trust his candidacy after multiple attempts and given his age, the former Vice President argued that Nigeria suffers from a fundamental leadership crisis.

He contended that his extensive experience as a former Vice President and a military governor sets him apart from President Tinubu.

Atiku pointed to a stark difference in governance quality, noting that several states headed by relatively young people are failing because they lack a capable and experienced president at the federal level to provide essential guidance.

He further attributed the poor performance of some state governments to a lack of mentorship and the benefit of seasoned experience at the apex of leadership.

Atiku further recommended the implementation of leadership training for young Nigerians, emphasizing that the country urgently needs a more structured approach to developing its future leaders.
