Nigerian singer-songwriter BNXN, formerly known as Buju has denied dropping his stage name because of criticisms by American rapper, Fat Joe.
BNXN reacted to recent claims by Fat Joe’s recent claims that his public criticism directly compelled the Nigerian artist to abandon his original stage name.
The friction escalated following a recent episode of the Joe and Jada podcast featuring Jamaican Reggae icon Buju Banton.
During the session, Fat Joe recounted a previous instance where he guest-hosted The Wendy Williams Show, during which he disparaged the “other Buju” in Africa.
He characterized the Nigerian artist as a fake guy attempting to appropriate Buju Banton’s legacy, ultimately claiming that his intervention “forced” the rebranding to BNXN.
Responding via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, BNXN born Daniel Benson expressed significant disapproval of the rapper’s narrative.
He accused Fat Joe of harboring a fundamental lack of understanding regarding African music and its global contributors.
BNXN characterized the rapper’s remarks as misinformed and disrespectful, advising him to seek better education regarding the Afrobeats industry.
Singer Joeboy also joined the conversation, describing Fat Joe’s assertions as dirty yarns and criticizing the patronizing tone used toward African musicians.
