As the Nigerian Senate resumes legislative activities, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has issued a strong call for citizens to take a more active role in governance by holding their elected representatives accountable.
Speaking on Tuesday, during the resumption of plenary, Akpabio emphasized that meaningful democratic progress depends on active engagement between lawmakers and the communities they serve.
He encouraged Nigerians to bring their grievances directly to their representatives, asserting that this process is essential for translating public concerns into effective government policy.
”The Senate is not merely a theatre of debate; it is a workshop of solutions,” Akpabio declared. “Where social media magnifies the noise of the moment, the Senate addresses the substance of the problem. Representation is a living covenant between the people and those whom they elect to speak in their name.”
Addressing the legislative agenda ahead, the Senate President highlighted the national budget as a critical ledger of national purpose.
He described the appropriation process as a vital declaration of intent, explaining that the document serves as the primary roadmap for the nation’s investment priorities and developmental aspirations.
Looking toward the challenges facing the country, Akpabio called for a departure from partisan politics, urging his colleagues to prioritize the national interest over political differences.
He acknowledged that while the difficulties currently facing Nigeria are real, they must be confronted with courage, wisdom, and a steadfast commitment to institutional strengthening.
The resumption of the National Assembly is expected to be a pivotal period, with the Senate set to deliberate on the national budget, ongoing constitutional amendment processes, and significant policy reforms.
”Let us differ in opinion but remain united in our duty to the Republic,” Akpabio told the chamber. “For above all our political differences stands a higher obligation, the obligation to serve Nigeria faithfully and to secure for our people a future worthy of their sacrifice and hope.”
