Heirs Energies commits over $10m to empower 2,000 African entrepreneurs

24 Mar 2026

Heirs Energies has announced a $10 million financial commitment to support 2,000 African entrepreneurs across two programme cycles, operating in direct partnership with the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF).

This massive capital injection is driven by the energy company’s foundational belief that sustainable energy development must be inextricably linked with sustained investments in human capital and local enterprise.

The announcement coincides with the Tony Elumelu Foundation’s recent unveiling of its 2026 cohort, which features 3,200 entrepreneurs selected from across all 54 African countries.

Through this collaborative platform, Heirs Energies is actively catalyzing business creation, job growth, and economic inclusion on a massive scale. The company’s contribution has been strategically deployed over two years.

In 2025, Heirs Energies supported 1,000 entrepreneurs, deliberately allocating 40 percent of the sponsorships to individuals from the Niger Delta, which included significant participation from the company’s host communities.

For the newly launched 2026 cycle, the firm is funding an additional 1,000 entrepreneurs and has increased its Niger Delta allocation to 50 percent, further deepening its economic focus on the region where it operates.

Underscoring a strong commitment to inclusive growth and gender parity, the company highlighted that 48 percent of all beneficiaries under its sponsorship are women.

The Chairman of Heirs Energies, Mr. Tony Elumelu, CFR, has consistently championed this approach to continental development.

Addressing the motivation behind these initiatives, Elumelu stated that Africa’s future will be built by Africans who create businesses, generate jobs, and drive economic transformation across the continent.

The company maintains that this substantial financial support is not merely philanthropy, but rather a core component of its operational strategy, recognizing that Africa’s energy future and its economic prosperity are deeply interconnected.

Beyond its targeted entrepreneurship programmes, Heirs Energies has recorded extensive, long-term community development impacts across its operations in OML 17.

The firm has successfully empowered over 500 youths through comprehensive skills acquisition and enterprise development initiatives. Educational advancement has also remained a top priority, with more than 1,621 students receiving critical educational grants.

On the healthcare front, the company’s medical outreach programmes have provided essential care to more than 18,000 individuals.

Heirs Energies has also successfully delivered over 135 community infrastructure projects, spanning the construction and rehabilitation of schools, healthcare facilities, local electrification, access roads, and vital water systems.

Expanding its impact well beyond its immediate host communities, the energy giant continues to play a pivotal role in Nigeria’s broader economic and infrastructural landscape.

The company’s consistent gas supply into the national domestic network currently enables the generation of over 350 megawatts (MW) of electricity. This critical energy output actively powers homes, educational institutions, and heavy industries, thereby supporting sustained economic activity at scale across the nation.
