Half year results: How BUA Cement achieved 80% profit surge

26 Jul 2026

Against a backdrop of persistent inflationary pressures and tough macroeconomic conditions in Nigeria, BUA Cement Plc delivered a remarkable financial performance for the first half of 2026.

The cement manufacturing giant posted an 80% surge in post-tax profit.

Market expansion

In the six months ending June 30, 2026, BUA Cement’s revenue accelerated sharply to ₦728.93 billion, a 25.6% increase from the ₦580.30 billion recorded in the same period of 2025.

This growth was fueled not only by sustained domestic demand for building materials and public infrastructure projects, but also by BUA’s entry into new market segments, which allowed the company to broaden its distribution footprint and strengthen its competitive position.

Cost containment
The real engine behind BUA’s profitability boom lies in its operational discipline. In an economic environment where energy, transport, and raw material expenses typically erode corporate earnings, the company successfully flattened its direct expenses.

By keeping cost of sales growth down to a modest 2.7% at ₦301.89 billion, gross profit leaped nearly 49% to ₦427.03 billion.

Commenting, the company’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Yusuf Binji highlighted that targeted cost-containment initiatives significantly reduced direct production costs per tonne.

By improving energy efficiency, streamlining factory operations, and leveraging localized supply chains, the manufacturer effectively decoupled top-line growth from operational overhead, driving wider operating margins despite prevailing inflation.

Shareholders gain

These operational efficiencies filtered directly down to the bottom line, pushing profit before tax up by 79% to ₦384.44 billion, while net profit after tax surged 80% to ₦324.88 billion. For investors, this translated into a dramatic rise in Earnings Per Share, which expanded to ₦9.59 from ₦5.34 in H1 2025.

Conclusion

The story behind BUA Cement’s half-year statement is one of operational efficiency overriding economic volatility demonstrating how tight cost control can transform steady revenue gains into exceptional profit growth.
