At least 27 farmers have been killed in a fresh wave of violence in Plateau State, after gunmen launched a deadly assault on Bindi-Jebbu, a village in the Tahoss Community of Riyom Local Government Area.

According to local sources, the attackers stormed the area on Monday, opening fire on residents and setting several houses ablaze. Among the dead were men and women, with many others sustaining varying degrees of injuries.

The injured victims were rushed to medical facilities across the state, including Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) and Plateau Hospital.

National President of the Berom Youth Moulders (BYM), Dalyop Solomon, who confirmed the incident to journalists in Jos, accused suspected Fulani militia of carrying out the attack. He described the scene as devastating, stating: “27 persons were killed and many were injured. We have taken the bodies to different hospitals pending the burial arrangement.”

As of press time, both the spokesperson of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), Major Samson Zhakom, and the state police command’s public relations officer, DSP Alabo Alfred, had not responded to inquiries.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Riyom Local Government Area, Bature Sati Shuwa, also confirmed the incident but said he was on his way to the community and could not yet provide the exact casualty figures.

The latest attack adds to a troubling pattern of insecurity in Plateau, a state long plagued by ethno-religious and land-based violence. Residents have continued to call for urgent government intervention to curb the frequent bloodshed.
