Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the release of 43 inmates from correctional centres across Lagos State, in a move aimed at decongesting custodial facilities and strengthening criminal justice reforms.

The decision was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), who noted that the action was taken pursuant to the governor’s constitutional powers under Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which provides for the prerogative of mercy.

According to the statement, the inmates were recommended for release by the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy after due consideration and in line with established legal and administrative procedures.

Pedro said the exercise reflects the state government’s commitment to justice, fairness, and the rule of law, while also addressing the challenge of overcrowding in correctional centres.

He added that the initiative would improve the logistics of transporting inmates to and from courts, thereby supporting faster and more efficient trials.

To this end, the state government has procured and delivered two coaster buses to the Nigerian Correctional Service to facilitate the secure and timely movement of inmates.

“This intervention is designed to enhance the efficiency of criminal trials and reduce delays associated with inmate logistics,” Pedro stated.

The government also disclosed that it has commenced the renovation and upgrade of facilities across correctional centres in the state to strengthen custodial infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the Attorney-General called on the Federal Government to consider transferring control of at least one correctional facility in Lagos to the state government to address persistent systemic challenges.

He noted that such a move could improve oversight, funding, transparency, and help tackle overcrowding, given the current constitutional provisions placing custodial services on the Concurrent Legislative List.

Pedro reiterated the state’s commitment to justice sector reforms, emphasising a balanced approach that protects victims’ rights, ensures public safety, promotes offender rehabilitation, and safeguards fundamental human rights.

The development follows a similar exercise in December 2025, when 91 inmates were released under the prerogative of mercy.
