Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has formally crowned three Ibadan high chiefs as traditional rulers, despite their absence at the coronation ceremony.
The event, which drew dignitaries from across the country, was held on Friday, April 3, at the historic Mapo Hall in Ibadan.
Those elevated include Akeem Mobolaji Adewoyin as the Ekerin Balogun of Ibadanland; Oyekola Babalola as the Ekarun Olubadan of Ibadanland; and Sarafadeen Abiodun Alli as the Ekarun Balogun of Ibadanland.
Although the newly installed traditional rulers were not present at the ceremony, the coronation rites were conducted, and they were officially pronounced Obas.
The presentation of the Staff of Office in absentia was carried out by the Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal.
No official reason was initially provided for their absence, raising concerns about the timing and coordination of the ceremony.
However, the state Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, explained that the elevation signifies their transition to Obaship status, granting them higher standing within the Ibadan traditional council.
Meanwhile, the Rashidi Ladoja dismissed reports of any rift between himself and Governor Makinde.
He clarified that the absence of the chiefs was due to personal engagements and not linked to any disagreement with the state government.
