Gov. Ademola Adeleke has summoned the management of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) over persistent blackout in Osogbo and other major towns in Osun State, describing the situation as unbearable for residents.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Governor said field reports indicate worsening power supply, with adverse effects on businesses and households. He noted that IBEDC must explain the challenges and work towards a lasting solution.
“I have received widespread complaints from all our major towns. Businesses are grinding to a halt. We cannot continue like this. I am inviting the management of IBEDC for discussions to find a way out,” he said.
Adeleke acknowledged that the power sector is capital-intensive and largely a national challenge but stressed that Osun State is significantly affected and requires immediate intervention.
“As a government, the medium- and long-term solution is to diversify energy sources. Renewable energy is a sustainable alternative, but it must be affordable. Our government is working to support the renewable energy sector,” he added.
The Governor disclosed that the state has enacted the Osun Electricity Law and is set to establish the Osun Electricity Regulatory Commission to license power generation companies and regulate the electricity market.
He said the move would open up the state’s energy sector and protect the interests of electricity consumers.
“While that is ongoing, we must engage IBEDC for immediate solutions. The Commissioner for Energy has been directed to organise a consultation meeting as soon as possible. Consumer advocacy groups will also be invited,” he said.
On support for rainstorm victims, Adeleke said the state emergency management agency has commenced the compilation of data of affected persons and has been directed to ensure that all victims are captured.
He urged victims to submit their details to the agency, assuring that the government is mobilising both local and national support.
The Governor added that contacts have been established with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Economic Council (NEC) to provide relief for affected residents.
He also commended the Osun West Senator, Lere Oyewumi, for raising the issue at the Senate.
